US journalist David Gilkey and her translator killed in Afghanistan


US journalist David Gilkey and his Afghan translator were killed on Sunday attacked a unit of the Afghan army with traveling in the southern province of Helmand, he announced the National Public Radio (NPR), for which he worked.

The translator was identified as Zabihullah Tamanna. Two other journalists traveling with Gilkey, identified as Tom Bowman and Monika Evstatieva, were unhurt.

NPR said the vehicle carrying Gilkey, 50, and his translator was attacked by gunfire near the town of Marjah.

"David has been covering wars and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan since 11 September 2001. It is dedicated to helping the public to see these wars and people trapped in them. He died respecting that commitment," said Michael Oreskes, vice president of news and editorial director of NPR.

As a man and as a photojournalist, David highlights the humanity of everyone around him qeu. He let us see the world and to others through their eyes, "he said.

Gilkey received in 2007 an Emmy Award for a series of videos about the battalion of Marines in Iraq Michigan.
