Cracks detected in the stadium that will host 2018 World Cup semifinal

Russian officials acknowledged Wednesday that cracks have been detected in one of the stands during the construction of the stadium Zenit St. Petersburg, which will host one of the semifinals of the World Cup of Russia 2018.

"In September 2015 during an inspection cracks in the sector C at a height of 20.2 meters were detected," he said a spokesman for the Construction Committee of St. Petersburg told local media.

Local media reported the appearance of cracks, leaks and water accumulation due to the violation of security protocols in the field of construction.

Although deformations found not threaten the integrity of the concrete, local authorities promptly proceeded to remedy the problem by filling the cracks with the highest quality material.

"To date there has been an expansion of the cracks and the frame of the building has not been altered. The registered deformations do not affect the safety and soundness of the construction," said the spokesman of the authorities.

The source stressed that this problem will not affect the deadlines for construction of the stadium, which will also host matches of the Confederations Cup in June 2017 and Euro 2020.
