BMW notified the National Administration for Highway Safety USA (NHTSA) that faulty wiring in the module of the fuel pump can produce fuel leak.
The defect can also cause the pump to stop working, causing unexpected shutdown of the engine, increasing the risk of accident.
BMW reported to federal authorities had no information that there have been accidents or injuries caused by this defect.
Company dealers will replace the affected modules free from December, BMW said.
The vehicles affected are several models of the 5 Series and X5 and X6 6 Series 2007-2012.
Of the total affected vehicles, 136,188 units are in the United States.
