Laptops running Google's Chrome operating system reached a milestone last quarter: first, manufacturers sold in the United States over Chromebooks that all desktops and laptops Apple combined, according to IDC.
The popularity of Chromebooks is fueled by strong demand for K-12 schools (which have primary and secondary) in the United States. Chromebooks are sold for prices starting at $ 85 and can run web-based applications.
"The cost is but one of the reasons why we're winning here," said analyst Huang Linn CNNMoney.
"Google has done a fantastic job to build an admirable management console makes these devices easy to deploy and manage in a school. I would argue that this has been one of the main reasons for its growth rather low price".
Although Microsoft continues to dominate sales in schools outside the United States, particularly with portable devices, it lost ground to Google in the United States, which represents one third of educational technology global market.
Chromebooks accounted for more than half of the sales of portable devices in US schools last year, an increase of 12% over 2014.
That growth has pushed Windows from 25% to 22% while Macs fell from 34% to 25%, according to a recent report co Futuresource Consulting.
