Ecuador asks IMF credit after earthquake
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) received a request from Ecuador to have a credit line, after the devastating earthquake that hit the country a few days ago, an official senior international lender said on Wednesday.
The IMF will be analyzing the request made by Ecuador to have the so-called Rapid Financing Instrument (IFR) agency, said Alejandro Werner, director of the Western Hemisphere, after an event in Mexico City.
Werner did not offer a specific amount in terms of the application.
IMF rules suggest that the credit line could reach up to 368 million dollars, according to Reuters calculations, but the level of access will depend on the needs of the balance of payments of the South American country.
Ecuador was shaken more than a week ago by a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that left more than 600 dead in the worst tragedy for the country in nearly 70 years.
