THESE abandoned cygnets have avoided their swan song
after being rescued from two killer adult birds.
The seven
10-week-old cygnets were in danger of being drowned by the older birds, who
moved on to their pond after the babies’ parents rejected them. The murderous
invaders started attacking the cygnets, and managed to kill one.
Witnesses
at Nook Pond in Bedworth, Warks, called a wildlife haven and the birds were
scooped up in nets and taken to the Nuneaton and Warwickshire Sanctuary.
Owner Jeff
Grewcock said: “We rescued them with big fishing nets. The rogue swans kept
attacking them even while we were there.
“One of
them had been drowned and they were starving because the swans had been attacking
them as they tried to eat. The people who oversee the pond said the parents had
flown off and never came back. Then two other swans turned up...”
The plucky
“ugly ducklings” are on the mend after their ordeal: “They are doing really
well – we’re fattening them up,” said MrGrewcock.
The cygnets
will be released into the wild when fully recovered.
