Playstation 4 exceeds 50 million units sold worldwide

Japanese video game maker Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced that its Playstation 4 console has more than 50 million units sold globally.

The device, which went on sale for the first time in the United States on November 15, 2013 and is now available in 122 countries, also got the best sales data during the "Black Friday" week, November 21 to 27 .

"We are truly delighted that the Playstation 4 community has continued to grow since launch three years ago," said Andrew House, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, in a statement distributed by the company.

This sales data includes the latest version of the console, the Playstation 4 Pro, which came to market in November this year.

Sales of games for this console reached 369.6 million worldwide.

House also noted that technical innovations, including the latest version, have been made possible by the "huge support" of its partners and fans around the world.

Despite these latest sales figures, the console is far from the best-selling video game gadgets in history: the Playstation 2 (157 million units sold), and Nintendo DS (154 million) and Gameboy (118 million) laptops.
