Matthew hurricane left 546 dead in Haiti

The authorities counted 546 dead in Haiti from Hurricane Matthew, while the UN warned of an outbreak of cholera among the thousands of people affected urgently awaiting humanitarian aid.

A provisional report released by Civil Protection, including 128 missing and 175,000 displaced by the hurricane.

The authorities indicated that the figure may be higher because they still do not have contact with some villages still cut off by the hurricane, whose eye made landfall on October 4 in western Haiti.

The hurricane forced the country to postpone the general elections on October 9, which will now be held on November 20, reported Friday the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP).

Matthew affected 2.1 million people, of which 1.4 million, including 592,581 children, need humanitarian assistance, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
