Presented prototype for clean oceans

Boyan Slat, founder of the project "The Ocean Cleanup" (cleaning the ocean), showed the first prototype of the project that aims to collect thousands of tons of plastic waste in the oceans Wednesday.

While most projects that try to collect used plastic boats comb the oceans, Boyan Slat, 21, wants to use the currents to catch them waste.

"Why do we have to go to waste if the waste can come to us?" He said at a press conference in the port of Scheveningen, on the outskirts of The Hague.

The idea was born when he was still a student in high school and sketched a sketch on a napkin.

On Thursday a first prototype will be deployed in the North Sea for a year. This is a barrier 100 m long floats formed by elongated and networks that capture the plastic pieces.
