"Yes, we have seen these deaths from Guillain-Barre syndrome, there have been three. But we invite prudence "about his possible relationship with zika, the WHO spokesman, Christian Lindmeier said in Geneva.

Colombia on Friday announced the deaths of three patients with this neurological disorder and had been in contact with zika, the virus that is affecting many Latin American countries.

"We should be careful not to mix" Lindmeier told a news conference. Last week the WHO declared the epidemic zika as "public emergency of international concern".

After Brazil, Colombia is the world's second most affected country by this virus transmitted by mosquitoes and is considered responsible for increasing cases of microcephaly in newborns.

Colombian authorities issued the first alert level (green) for hospitals to be prepared to respond to a spread of the disease and recommended that women who postpone six to eight months their pregnancies.

There is no vaccine, treatment or rapid tests for the virus discovered in 1947 in Uganda diagnosis. According to WHO, at least 12 companies and public agencies in the world are working on a vaccine whose marketing could take years.

The UN agency is also studying the development of therapies such as controlled dissemination of generically modified mosquitoes.
