The Winston cyclone leaves death and destruction evacuees passing through Fiji
At least 21 people have lost their lives in Fiji and thousands have been displaced by the Winston cyclone, which caused widespread destruction as it passes through the archipelago in the South Pacific, where the body count continues and damage today.
The latest confirmed death corresponds to a ten year old boy who drowned in Nausori town, located about 18 kilometers northeast of Suva, this afternoon to the National Office of Disaster Response.
Prime Minister of Fiji, Frank Binimarama today ordered the Administration to send funds quickly, material and personnel to affected areas.
"There Fijians out there without water, without a roof with which to cover their heads, without food and basic services," the president said during a meeting with the National Office of Disaster Response, according to a press release official.
Winston visited Fiji with winds of 230 kilometers per hour and gusts of 325 kilometers per hour, plus heavy rains.
"It is our duty to determine their needs and alleviate them as soon as possible," said the president of Fiji, which has a population of about 810,000 inhabitants, of which 87 percent live on the islands of Viti Levu (west) and Vanua Levu ( north).
The centers of government evacuated 8,438 people attended today: 5,880 in the Western Division, 1260 in the northern division, 1,177 in the Central Division and 121 in the southern division, according to official data.
Still, there are families who have spent the last two days in the open, like Gurnam Singh, who lived in Cuvu, an area in the southwest of Viti Levu, until the cyclone destroyed the three houses they inhabited.
"Strong winds carried the three houses (...) There was nothing left. We spent Saturday night and Sunday in a sugar cane plantation. We are 28, including a baby, "Singh told the local newspaper The Fiji Times.
