Authorities suspect the father of the little known member of a local gang, may have been the target of an attack that occurred Tuesday night in the city of Compton, south of downtown Los Angeles.
Witnesses reported seeing a gunman in the parking lot where Autumn Johnson and his parents lived.
The police took the baby, who received a bullet in the head, to a nearby hospital but died soon after.
"It looks like someone came (to the house) and was shooting inside the house someone and that the baby received a stray bullet," said Lt. John Corrina local radio KTLA.
Compton is considered one of the most violent cities in the Los Angeles area, where there have been 475 violent crimes, including 8 murders in the past six months, according to the Los Angeles Times.
