China threat to the US today. with "serious consequences" if they agree to put the name of Chinese
dissident and Nobel Peace Liu Xiaobo to a place in Washington, so he
demanded that Congress and the US Government stop this proposal.
The Senate conducted a bill that calls for putting the name of the dissident and Nobel Peace Prize, Liu Xiaobo, the square in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
Liu was sentenced in 2009 to 11 years in prison for signing a document calling for democratic change in China, and a year later was awarded the Nobel.
A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Hong Lei, said today that Beijing opposes "firmly" this US bill because it believes would violate "the basic rules of governance of international relations."
The issue is particularly sensitive for the government in Beijing, and Liu is the only Nobel Prize for Peace in the world that is currently in prison.
Chinese foreign spokesman has called on Congress to stop the discussion of this bill and asked the same to the US administration.
The Senate has already approved Friday the bill, which must now be ratified by the House of Representatives, although the US government would have the option to veto this law to go ahead, as it must be signed by the president.
The proposal to create a square dedicated to Liu Xiaobo was presented by one of the current candidates for the presidential nomination of the Republican Party Ted Cruz, who represents the conservative wing of training.
In 2014, the US Congress has tried to rename the square in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, putting the name of this famous dissident.
