The presidential elections in Portugal, where the conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is favorite to succeed Anibal Cavaco Silva, on Sunday officially concluded at 2000 GMT with the closure of schools in the archipelago of the Azores.
An hour earlier, at 1900 GMT, they had already closed the polls in the Mainland and in the archipelago of Madeira.
It is expected that abstention has been slightly reduced compared to the elections of 2011 (when it reached a record level of 53.48%), according to forecasts released by major television networks lusas, that place now between 48 and 53%.
The ratings, which were called 9.7 million voters have passed without incidents of relevance.
The highlight was the decision of the National Elections Commission (CNE) to investigate a statement to the press the leader of Democrat Party CDS-PP, Paulo Portas, considering that it could imply support one of the candidates standing presidential, specifically Rebelo de Sousa.
