An earthquake measuring 4.9 degrees on the Richter scale struck Sunday Maule, Bio Bio and Araucania, located in southern Chile, without causing casualties or apparent damage, authorities said.
The quake occurred at 01.37 local time (04.37 GMT) and its epicenter was located 30 kilometers south of Cobquecura, while the hypocenter was 38.6 kilometers deep, said the Seismological Center at the University of Chile.
The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA) said the quake did not meet the necessary characteristics to generate a tsunami on the coasts.
The quake was felt with intensities between grade III and grade V in the international Mercalli scale, which goes from I to XII, in various locations in the region, according to the National Emergency Office (Onemi).
