Uruguayan Foreign Minister says there are too many political prisoners in Venezuela

Uruguayan Foreign Minister, Rodolfo Nin Novoa, criticized the "quality of democracy" in Venezuela and said that "there are too many political leaders imprisoned" in that country, in an interview published Wednesday by the weekly search.

"The quality of democracy in that country (Venezuela) -not why I get into it saying this-is far from satisfactory," said the foreign minister, interviewed at the end of the 49th summit of leaders of Mercosur in Asuncion (Paraguay).

Nin Novoa said that "democracy is not just elections." "One of the things that defines democracy is the separation of powers, freedom of the press, respect for minorities; that minorities can it become majority who do not put obstacles, "he said.

Asked whether his party, the ruling Frente Amplio (left), take a stand on the situation of political prisoners in Venezuela, the Chancellor replied that "it is very difficult to interfere in those things."

"I know there are too many political prisoners. Too! And it sounds weird that so many, "he added.

Chancellor's statements coincide with the close of a summit that will be remembered for the clash between Argentina's president, Mauricio Macri, and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodríguez.

Macri called on Monday for "the prompt release of political prisoners in Venezuela," an argument that was described by the Venezuelan foreign minister as "interference".

They are seventy five Venezuelan opposition who are in prison.
