Christmas parties left 19 dead and 16 injured in Guatemala

Christmas parties left at least 19 dead in Guatemala, including a two month old baby who was shot in a confusing incident in the western department of Quetzaltenango, authorities said Monday.

According to the National Civil Police (PNC), 15 people were shot dead and two knives in different parts of the Central American country, and two others died in traffic accidents and 16 were injured in different circumstances.

Among the dead include a two month old baby who died from gunshot wounds suffered during an incident in Quetzaltenango, incident in which his mother, Mary Apolinaria Perpuac, 26, was wounded.



In another incident, the bodies of two girls, aged 13 and 15 years old, were located in the central department of Chimaltenango with stab wounds.

In the municipality of AsunciĆ³n Mita in the southeastern department of Jutiapa, another woman was shot dead.

Two people were killed and 10 more injured in traffic accidents in Guatemala during Christmas.

Relief agencies, meanwhile, reported eight homes burned by a fire in a slum in the south of the Guatemalan capital, causing no casualties. EFE
