Hollande: cop21 is a great hope that we have no right to disappoint

Le Bourget, France.- The climate conference (cop21) is "an immense hope that we have no right to disappoint," because at stake is "the future of the planet and life", French President Francois Hollande said Monday inaugurated the event in the presence of 150 heads of state and government.

"Never what has been at stake in an international meeting was so important," Hollande said, adding that the agreement to be negotiated in Paris between now and December 11 to be "universal, variable and binding", AFP reported.

According Hollande, it is necessary to "define a credible path capable of holding warming below 2 C, or even if possible 1.5 C".

"It will be necessary to establish a regular assessment of our progress and a regulatory mechanism up to our commitments every five years," he said.

The French president also stressed that action against climate change should be "solidarity". "No state should withdraw from its commitments and no country should be left alone against climate deregulation".

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the representatives of the 195 countries negotiating the agreement "choose the path of compromise and if necessary flexibility".
