USA tested technology to detect illegal drones

The technology will detect radio signals used to operate drones within 8 kilometers (5 miles), which could place the operator, an official from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure of the House of Representatives.

The FAA has not yet decided when and where the technology will be used, said Assistant Administrator Michael Whitaker.

The administration receives one hundred complaints a month from pilots who have seen drones and aircraft near airports, Whitaker said.

A drone, even though few kilos, could cause serious injury if absorbed by a motor or crashes into a window.

Technology "provides a proven to detect, identify and track passively drones and their operators middle ground," he said in a statement John Mengucci, president of CACI International Inc., the company that provides the technology. The FAA signed the agreement this week.

Between November 2014 and August 2015, the FAA received more than 700 reports of sightings by pilots drones, although there is the possibility that birds have been confused drone. Most flights appear to be illegal.

Fans can operate drones over eight kilometers from the nearest airport and no more than 120 meters (400 feet) high. The FAA has issued 1,700 licenses to traders with the same restrictions.

The Forest Service has reported the presence of 18 unauthorized near fire drones and 10 incidents affecting air operations firefighters.
