The terse statement simply reports that the launch took place Wednesday at 05h50 (20h50 GMT Tuesday) from a submarine in the Sea of Japan.

The test launch comes as South Korea and the United States develop vast joint military exercises, described by Washington and Seoul as "defensive"

But Pyongyang warned that if its sovereignty is violated could launch retaliatory nuclear attacks.

Relations between North Korea and the West on one side and its southern neighbor on the other take many months of tensions as the North Korean regime continues its program to develop nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.
