South African President must return $ 500,000 used to reform home


South African President Jacob Zuma, must reimburse the state $ 500,000 of public funds used to reform their private residence, recommended the Ministry of Finance, which ruled after a court decision.

"The reasonable percentage (...) that the president is going to have to pay personally will be 87.94%. This percentage corresponds to 7,814,555 rands", equivalent to a part of the works, he said Treasury in a document sent to the constitutional court which had access AFP.

In late March, the Constitutional Court ruled that the head of state had violated the constitution by refusing to return public funds used to renovate his private residence.

Officially the president had justified the spending to improve housing security, located in the Zulu area in the east of the country, but as part of the reforms a swimming pool, an amphitheater, a barn and a place was built to house visits .
