Earthquake shakes magnitude 6 southern coast of Mexico
An earthquake of magnitude 6 on the Richter scale jolted the coast of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, no casualties or major damage so far reported, according to a report released by the National Seismological Service (SSN).
"After monitoring statewide no damages reported so far by earthquake a few minutes ago," Chiapas Civil Protection reported via Twitter.
The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 7.51 local time (12.51 GMT), was located in waters of the Mexican Pacific, 122 kilometers southwest of the town of Huixtla, in Chiapas, and at a depth of 20 kilometers.
Civil Protection Office said in the same social network that triggered the review protocol statewide.
Mexico is one of the most important seismic zones in the world, as interacting tectonic plates as the Pacific, Cocos, North America, Caribbean and Rivera, and most of the earthquakes recorded in the southern states, especially in Guerrero and Oaxaca.
