Global warming causes flooding in arid areas

Global warming will cause an increase in rainfall in some of the driest areas of the planet, a phenomenon that will cause more floods and extreme sudden flooding.

"We found a strong relationship between global warming and increased rainfall, especially in areas outside the tropics," said Markus Donat, author and academic from the University of New South Wales of Australia.

The rising temperatures caused by global warming will cause increased evaporation, which will result in a greater number of extreme rather than increased availability of water reserves floods, according to a statement from the university.

"This research suggests that the increase in extreme rainfall will at the regional level in dry and not as an average across the globe areas," stressed the author of the study, which compared arid and humid regions like Oceania, Asia and Africa.

The research, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, also warns that the expected increase in rainfall will create a problem in these regions without infrastructure to cope with flooding.
