27 presidents ask activate the Democratic Charter to Venezuela
27 former heads of state and government signed an agreement to ask the Organization of American States (OAS) to be applied American Democratic Charter.
Democratic initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA) issued the statement to the OAS to begin the respective procedures in order to control what their judgment considered a "serious constitutional and democratic alteration affecting Venezuela".
In this sense, they hope to curb arbitrary decisions by the executive power, which began from the legislative elections in which the opposition won 112 deputies.
In addition, they are urging the OAS to take initiatives they consider pertinent framed within the Democratic Charter.
The presidents who signed the statement were from Spain, Panama, Ecuador, Colombia and Mexico, supported by Asdrubal Aguiar, CEO of IDEA-Democratic.
The report highlighted the statement in Article 3 of the Democratic Charter, which reads: "Access to power and its exercise subject to the rule of law; the holding of regular, free, fair and based on universal and secret suffrage as an expression of the sovereignty of the people; and the separation and independence of public powers. "
