US exiles will protest outside Cuba during Obama visit
The Cuban exile group Democracy Movement in Miami announced plans to launch fireworks from boats in the sea off Cuba when President Barack Obama visits the island in March, urging him to advocate for human rights.
the anti-Castro organization, which in the past has made similar statements, plans to launch fireworks in international waters off Havana on March 21, the first day of Obama's visit to Cuba, he told AFP the president of the Democracy Movement Ramon Saul Sanchez.
"The message to Obama is that (...) it is linked not only with the regime in Cuba, but links with civil society, and raise your voice for human rights and in favor of a transition to democracy" Sánchez said.
In addition, the protest will also seek to ask the government of Cuba the "cessation of repression" of dissidents, release of political prisoners and the possibility that the exiles return to "help the people" of the island, the president said the exile organization in Miami, Florida (southeastern United States).
Obama announced that he will visit Cuba on 21 and 22 March, a move that will cement the thawing process initiated by Washington and Havana in December 2014 after half a century of enmity. The president has said he will address the issue of human rights during the trip, the first US president to visit the island in nearly 90 years.
Sanchez said his organization is currently getting all the necessary permissions to perform the protest and said it will be a small number of boats which make the crossing to "no worry" to the US authorities. "We do not seek it provoke anyone," he said.
The organization has already made over 25 similar tours since 1995.
Havana has cataloged in the past these manifestations of "provocation" and Sanchez "terrorist" with carte blanche from Washington.
