A dozen gay couples celebrated today in Lima to demand symbolic
weddings in Peru legalization of civil unions for same-sex, a legal
instrument for sharing heritage assets between cohabiting without being
married.

Symbolic marriages were performed in the Parque del Amor, located in the Lima district of Miraflores, as part of the fourteenth annual edition of the "Love does not discriminate," held every February 14 by the Peruvian Network Trans, Lesbian, gay and Bisexual (LGBT Red Peruana).
Secretary advocacy of the Peruvian Red LGBT Edward Juarez, told Efe that the purpose of the activity is to encourage the state to legalize civil unions between same sex and to recognize the diversity of all forms of families regardless sexual orientation or gender identity.
Juarez said that couples who participate in this symbolic wedding are real because they maintain a relationship and form families for years.
"Unfortunately, the state does not recognize and therefore seek to give visibility to this reality, for institutions to take them into account. Hopefully the next government and equal civil legalize same-sex marriage, "said Juarez.
The representative of the Peruvian LGBT Network said his organization brings together more than 30 national associations and "rejects any religious interference which violates the guarantee of human rights of the group LGBT public policy."
Organizers of symbolic weddings released a manifesto urging candidates in the upcoming national elections on April 10 to take on the demands of the group of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual Peru.
