The Russian ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, said Wednesday that his country "does not conform" to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, "or a single regime" in Syria, and considered to be "naive" to think that with his departure the country's problems will be solved.
"Russia does not conform to support a unique personality or a single system," Chizhov said on Al Asad, which has been a traditional ally Russia, at a conference organized by the European Policy Center on Russia's role in the crisis in the Middle Half.
In the ambassador's opinion, "it is at least naive to think that if one day the President Assad is not in power, all problems are automatically solved."
Chizhov said, addressing the problems in the region, Russia "proceeds from the principle of international law, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states."
It made clear that "any political process should be led by the Syrians," and they deserve "decide on their future government, which must reflect the aspirations of all segments of society" and must be "inclusive".
"It is obviously necessary to reform, but must be supported by the Syrian people and not be imposed from outside," he said.
