Global alarm over nuclear test

US and Japan have requested an urgent meeting of the Security Council of the UN to impose sanctions on North Korea after the nuclear test today of a hydrogen bomb, which has raised global alarm and to know China, the main ally of Kim Jong-un.

At this meeting of the Security Council, Japan prompted "a new resolution" to punish the regime in Pyongyang, according to diplomatic sources quoted by Kyodo news agency.

In response to the three tests conducted earlier by Pyongyang in 2006, 2009 and 2013, the Security Council has already imposed heavy sanctions on the country strictly limiting their international transactions and deepen its economic isolation.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that if it is confirmed that there was indeed carried out the test would be a clear violation of the UN resolutions, while the US said that in that case will respond "appropriately".

"We will continue to protect and defend our allies in the region, including the Republic of Korea (South Korea), and properly respond to each and every one of the North Korean provocations", said the State Department spokesman, John Kirby.
Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, condemned "strongly" the new North Korean nuclear test, and said his country will give a "strong response" to what he considers a "serious threat" to its security will not "tolerate any manner".

Abe spoke to the media shortly before 0400 GMT, half an hour after Pyongyang announced by the state television have made its first test with a nuclear bomb.

"Clearly violates the resolutions of the Security Committee of the United Nations and is a serious challenge to the measures we are undertaking to achieve global denuclearization," Koizumi insisted.
Abe said Japan, which was recently appointed non-permanent member country of the Security Committee of the UN, will strengthen its cooperation with the United States, South Korea, China and Russia "to take comprehensive measures".

South Korea "strongly condemns North Korea for conducting a fourth nuclear test in clear violation of Security Council resolutions," he said for his part the Foreign Ministry of this country in a statement.

Seoul has pledged to cooperate with the United States and other countries to provide the necessary responses, including expanding UN sanctions already imposed on North Korea for its past atomic and missile tests.

The South Korean president, Park Geun-hye, convened a meeting of the National Security Council, while the armed forces raised the alert level of troops and stepped up border surveillance.

China firmly rejected the North Korean nuclear test and called on Pyongyang to keep its commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying, Beijing announced that consultations call a North Korean representative, without specifying whether it was the ambassador.

He also read a statement in which, besides expressing the rejection of his government, said that "China knew nothing" in advance of the trial.

The tone of this statement is the toughest in a long time shown by China to North Korea, Beijing has its main political and economic support, but the bilateral relationship is far from going through its best.

"China will fulfill its international obligations and work with the international community to the goal of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula reality," he added.
France, one of the five permanent members of the Security Council also called for "a strong reaction from the international community", in which clearly appears as a first step to tighten sanctions against the North Korean regime.

French President Francois Hollande, described as "unacceptable" the nuclear test and called for "a strong reaction from the international community."

In Taiwan, President Ma Ying-jeou held a security meeting at the highest level to take action and asked the national security units to follow closely the situation, given the relative proximity of the island to North Korea.

Finally, the head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini called on North Korea to get involved again in a dialogue with the international community and end its "illegal and dangerous behavior."
