The region of Beijing announced Saturday that this year will close 2,500 small polluting enterprises in a bid to reduce air pollution, which has forced authorities to declare their first two red flags in December.
It has also set the goal of reducing by 500,000 tons per year coal consumption in the six central districts of the region (those that form the city of Beijing)
The goal is to close all coal-fired boilers in the city by 2020, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The closures of polluting enterprises will be held in four districts (one city and three in the periphery).
Beijing region has gradually eliminating major sources of pollution (such as coal power plants) yet have proliferated small sources of pollution.
The announcement came almost at the same time a new warning from the National Center for Environmental Control by heavy pollution to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region over the next Tuesday and Wednesday.
The authorities of the region issued last December the first two red alerts by high air pollution.
Beijing recorded in 2015 an average of 80.6 micrograms per cubic meter of PM 2.5 (the most harmful) particles, according to official figures, representing 1.3 times the Chinese national standard, while the World Health Organization Health recommended not to exceed a maximum average of 25 micrograms.
