Obama on the agreement on climate change: "This is huge"

The US president, Barack Obama, described as something "huge" the first universal agreement to combat climate change approved today at the climate summit (cop21) in Paris.

"This is huge: nearly every country in the world just signed the Paris agreement on climate change - thanks to American leadership," Obama said in his first reaction to it, posted on its Twitter account.

The Paris cop21 approved the first universal agreement to combat climate change, in which nearly 200 countries, both developed and developing, commit to historically to travel together towards a low carbon economy.



At 19.26 local time (18.26 GMT), cop21 president, Laurent Fabius, gave the expected hammer consensus at the plenary of the summit and said: "We just made a big thing", amid applause and hugs of those present.

French President Francois Hollande joined nothing approved the agreement and melted into a hug with UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon as Secretary of State, John Kerry, were falling tears of emotion.

In a statement to explain the details of the agreement, the White House considered the "most ambitious" of history, because it establishes a "durable to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases" framework.

Obama was in Paris last week and participated in the opening session of the summit, with the aim of promoting negotiations towards a "successful" deal.

The US president has made the fight against climate change a priority of his second term, despite opposition from Republicans. EFE
