Collect signatures to ask the Moroccan government to decriminalize homosexuality

A campaign to collect signatures was launched online to ask the Minister of Justice of Morocco, Mustafa Ramid, to decriminalize homosexuality in the North African country.

The request was made through the Avaaz platform by a group of gay activists integrated in a group called Akaliyat (minorities) to combat discrimination and criminalization of sexual and religious minorities, and since its inception has collected 175 signatures yesterday.

The promoters of the application denounced "the persecution and repression suffered dozens of homosexuals in Morocco" and called on the Moroccan Minister override legal provisions criminalizing homosexuality "that directly threaten individual liberty of the people."

Homosexuality is criminalized in Morocco under Article 489 of the Penal Code, punishable by a sentence of between six months and three years "who commits an indecent act against nature with an individual of the same sex", and also suffers from a large social disapproval.
