The defendants are Spanish priest Lucio Vallejo Balda, the former public relations Chaouqui Francesca, Italian journalists Gianluigi Nuzzi and Emiliano Fittipaldi and Nicola Maio, excolaborador of the commission investigating the economic and administrative offices of the Holy See (COSEA).
Vallejo Balda is in custody in the building of the Vatican Gendarmerie since last November 1, while Chaouqui was released and available to the judiciary after collaborating with the Vatican Justice.
