Strong earthquake in Indonesia caused damage to property

A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 struck Wednesday the Indonesian island of Alor, located east of the country, causing severe damage to houses and other buildings, residents and officials said.

The disaster management agency of Indonesia said that there were no reports of casualties from the quake, which also shook the neighboring East Timor.

"Some buildings were damaged, including a relatively large church near the border, and telephone lines also suffered damage temporarily," Daud, an official with the national disaster management agency said.

The epicenter was 83 kilometers northwest of the capital of East Timor, Dili, said the US Geological Survey (USGS), which had initially reported a magnitude of 6.8.

A tsunami warning was issued.
