Israeli army closed Palestinian radio for inciting violence

The military confiscated broadcasting equipment to end "a campaign of incitement that led to increased violence in the region in recent weeks," said army spokesman said in a statement.

The Israeli army announced on Tuesday having closed Palestinian radio Al Hurria in Hebron in the occupied West Bank, accused of encouraging the attacks with knife and spreading "false information" to incite violence.

The military confiscated broadcasting equipment to end "a campaign of incitement that led to increased violence in the region in recent weeks," said army spokesman said in a statement, AFP quoted.



Al Hurria is accused of having "encouraged the knife attacks, violent riots, spreading false and malicious information, claiming that the security forces (Israeli) executed and kidnapped Palestinians view to provoke violence," the statement said.

Radio was created in 2002 in the Gaza Strip by Fatah, the movement headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Its headquarters was transferred to Hebron after Hamas Islamists took power in the Palestinian territory in 2007.

Al Hurria and had to temporarily close in 2002 and 2008. The army did not specify the duration of the current measure.

The wave of violence in the Palestinian territories and Israel left from the October 1, 69 Palestinians killed nine Israelis. Half of the Palestinians died committing attacks, mostly with knives against Israelis.
